Description | In 1832 the Ormskirk Gas Light Company was established by Memorandum and Articles of Association. The works were built at Aughton Street. The company was incorporated by Act of Parliament under the same name in 1853 and in 1892 a further Act extended the area of supply to include Lydiate Maghull and Melling. An Act of 1915 enabled the company to provide electricity and the name of the company was changed to the Ormskirk and District Gas and Electricity Co. This was altered again in 1928 (?) to the Ormskirk District Gas Co. In 1935 the undertaking was acquired by the UKGC Ltd though it continued to trade under its own name. In 1937 the company purchased the undertaking of Chorley RDC (formerly Croston UDC) whose works were on Station Rd in Croston (established by the Croston Gas Light Co Ltd in 1863). The Order of 1937 also extended the area of supply to include Bispham, Croston, Mawdesley, Parbold, Wrightington and parts of Rufford. The undertaking vested in the Liverpool Group of the NWGB in 1949. This collection contains a few administrative, finance and estate records as well as two items relating to gas distribution.
