Title
NORTHWICH GAS COMPANY
Description
The first undertaking in Northwich was the Northwich Gas Light and Coke Co Ltd formed by Deed of Settlement in 1839. This company was incorporated as the Northwich Gas Co by Act of Parliament in 1882. Its works were in Cross Street, Northwich. The Northwich undertaking was the first in the country to build a spiral guided gasholder, erected by T Newbigging in 1890. In 1937 the company was purchased by the UKGC Ltd, offers also having been received from the Severn Valley Gas Corp Ltd. Attempts were made to establish a Mid-Cheshire Group of Gas Companies made up of the Altrincham, Runcorn and Northwich undertakings though this was adjourned in 1945 when the future of the gas industry was under review. There were also plans for a new gasworks to be built at Rudheath in 1948-9 but these were abandoned soon after nationalisation in 1949 and the works remained at Cross St. In 1949 it formed part of the Mid-Cheshire Group of the NWGB. The main records in this collection are administrative, financial and estate. There are minute books, site plans and accounts. There is also a press cuttings book and contracts for coal.
