Title
NORTH CHESHIRE AND DISTRICT GAS COMPANY
Description
In 1854 -1855 two companies submitted Bills to Parliament to supply gas to Hyde: the Hyde Original GC, owned by Isaac Booth, and the Hyde GC, whose chairman was Samuel Hibbert. In 1855 Booth sold his works to Hyde GC and withdrew his Hyde Original Gas Bill, in favour of the Hyde Gas Bill, which became an Act before the end of 1855. The 1881 Hyde Gas Act conferred additional powers on the company including powers to acquire additional lands. The main works were located at Raglan St alongside the Peak Forest Canal in Hyde. The Hyde Gas Act, 1938 enabled the company to purchase both the Dukinfield Corporation and the Denton UDC undertakings and changed the name of Hyde GC to the North Cheshire and District GC in July 1938. Attempts were made to acquire the Hollingworth Gas Co Ltd in 1945 but failed. The NC&DGC became part of the UKGC in 1939. On nationalisation in 1949 the company became part of NWGB.(See also NW:DEU, DUU) There are administrative, estate, finance, personnel and technical records in this collection. It includes a good series of minute books, site plans, accounts and shareholder records, service agreements and some distribution drawings. [1854 - 1949]
