Description | Attempts were also made to establish a rival gas company, the Sutton Gas Co, which also failed. In 1858 negotiations began again and in 1860 the Local Board succeeded in taking over the company. The 1860 Act also extended the area of supply to include Sutton, Hurdsfield, Tytherton and Upton. The works were at Hibel Road / Commercial Road. A further Act of 1882 enabled the works to expand and extended the area of supply again. The works were improved in 1913 and the retorts reconstructed between 1925-1927. The undertaking became part of the North Cheshire Group of the NWGB in 1949. There are only two items in this collection: a general ledger and a photograph. |
