Description | From 1825, the Provincial Portable Gas Company (of London), made and sold gas in the Gaythorn area. In 1831, Mr. James Fernley bought the Gaythorn Gas Station. He then sold the works to the Manchester Commissioners in 1835. The works steadily enlarged and was one of the major producers of gas in Manchester. In 1929, its role changed from gas making to gas distribution.In 1949, there were seven gasholders on the site, storing gas from the Partington and Bradford Road sites. |
