LANCASTER CORPORATION
Description
The Lancaster Gaslight Company was established by Deed of Settlement in 1826 and works were built at St George's Quay alongside the river Lune and the railway line. The company was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1856 as the Lancaster Gas Company. Additional buildings and a holder were at Moor Lane and a showroom was established in Market Square. In 1880 Lancaster Corporation purchased the undertaking and the works expanded. In 1923 the Corporation decided to renew the carbonising plant and Woodall -Duckham installed an inclined retort system.
