Title
DALTON-IN-FURNESS URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL
Description
A gas works was erected in Dalton -in-Furness in 1853 at Mary Bank, land which was sold by the Furness Railway Co. to a committee of management who ran the undertaking. In 1877 the Dalton Local Board entered into an agreement with Barrow Corporation for the purchase of that part of the undertaking which related to Dalton's gas supply. An Act of 1878 also provided for the purchase of the Dalton gasworks by the Dalton Local Board though this purchase did not take place and Dalton continued to be supplied by the works of the management committee. In 1936 the Dalton gasworks were purchased by the Dalton UDC and additional lands at 'Workhouse Gardens', Goose Green were acquired for a new gasworks. The undertaking remained in local authority ownership until it vested in the Furness Group of the NWGB. This collection contains only property and legal records. There is a report on the works, blueprints of plant and a legal agreement. [1903 - 1949]
