Description | The Bury Gas Light and Coke Co was formed by AoP in 1828. The first gasworks were at Freetown. A further Act in 1846 raised capital and changed the company name to the Bury Gaslight and Coke Co. In 1857 the undertaking was purchased by the Bury Improvement Commissioners which became the Bury Corporation in 1876. A new works site was sought and then abandoned as the old works, known as the Elton works, were extended and refurbished in 1881. Private railway sidings were added in 1892. In 1902 showrooms and offices were acquired in Broad St. At nationalisation in 1949 the undertaking became part of the Bury-Rossendale Group. This collection contains mostly estate and technical records. These include site plans, photographs and mains books. |
