Title
BURNLEY CORPORATION
Description
The Burnley Gas Light Co was formed in 1823 and works were built on a site adjacent to the Calder river and the canal. They were known as the Parker Lane works. In 1855 the Burnley Improvement Commissioners took over the undertaking and the site was extended to meet the demand for supply. A further gasworks site was acquired in 1880 at Stoneyholme for additional storage. A new gasworks was needed by 1914 and land was sought but WW1 interrupted the plans and it was 1919 before the necessary Order was obtained to allow gas manufacture on the new site at Oswald St. This site became the main works and was extended in 1927. Parker Lane continued in use and supplemented the gas supply until 1930 when additional supply was purchased from the coke ovens at Altham. In 1949 the undertaking vested in the NWGB and became part of the Burnley-Colne Group. The main series in this collection is estate and property records. There are 13 specification books for plant and buildings, plans and drawings and distribution records.
