ST. HELENS CORPORATION
Description
The St Helens Gas Light Co was formed in 1832 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1852. The undertaking was purchased by the St Helens Corporation in 1875 and works were built on a site between Warrington New Road and Warrington Old Road. The works underwent three reconstructions before 1908 when it became the first undertaking to install the Glover-West Continuous Vertical Retort system. Samual Glover was Engineer to the St Helens Corporation Gas Dept. A waterless gasholder was added in 1931 and the works were further extended in 1946. Additional land was acquired for storage at Pocket Nook and Eccleston. In 1949 the undertaking became part of the South Lancashire Group of the NWGB This collection includes records of administration, finance, a large number of estate and property items and some legal and technical records. There is one minute book (1832 - 1850), a series of drawings of plant and a number of site plans as well as title deeds and distribution records. [1832 - 1949]
