SOUTHPORT CORPORATION
Description
The undertaking at Southport was established in 1848 by the Southport Commissioners and the works were built in Eastbank St. A second works was built at Crowlands in 1872 and gas was produced by both stations until 1878 when the earlier works closed down and production was concentrated entirely at Crowlands. The area of supply extended within a six mile radius of Southport Town Hall. In 1913 a Glover -West system of vertical retorts was installed, following St Helens the first gasworks to install this type of retort. The undertaking remained in the ownership of Southport Corporation until 1949 when it vested into the Liverpool Group of the NWGB. This collection contains only six items: three estate records including a detailed report on purifying plant, financial accounts and a mains sketch book. [1876 - 1950]
