Description
The Rochdale Road site was bought 1824. It opened the same year, and was originally called St.George's Station. It was the second Manchester station, after Water Street.The Manchester Gas Act of 1824 made the arrangements official and set the areas of supply for the Police Commissioners Gas undertaking. Thirty 'Gas Directors' were appointed to oversee the work.In 1885, at its peak, Rochdale Road had four retort houses and employed 700 men. It was still open in 1949.
