Title
LEYLAND GAS COMPANY
Description
Leyland and Farington Gas Company was registered under the Joint Stock Companies Act of 1856 for supplying gas to Leyland and Farington in the parishes of Leyland and Penwortham and other townships. In 1863 it was dissolved and under the Leyland and Farington Gas Act 1863 was re-incorporated under the same name. The 1909 Leyland Gas Act gave the company further powers to maintain, renew and extend its mains and the limits of supply. The Act also allowed the changing of the name to Leyland Gas Company. In 1914 the Leyland Gas Act extended the limits of supply further, defining the boundary between it and the limits of supply of Preston Gas Company. It enpowered the raising of more capital and the construction, maintenance and testing of the quality and supply of the gas. In 1937 the UK Gas Corporation Ltd held the controlling interest in the undertaking. In 1949 it became part of the Preston Group of the NWGB. This collection contains a large number of estate, finance and personnel records. There are also some administrative and legal records. There are several plans of the works, accounts and share records and service agreements for employees.
