Description | Established in 1834 as a non statutory company, the Leigh District Gas Co was incorporated by AoP in 1861. It was authorised to supply three Local Boards at Pennington, Bedford and Westleigh with gas. In 1874 the three Boards amalgamated and the area of supply was extended to include Golborne among other places. However, the mains did not extend to Golborne and local consumers threatened to establish their own undertaking. The three Boards became Leigh UDC and finally Leigh Corporation by 1901. The works at Down Croft / Gas Street in Leigh were extended and improved and were the only works in the UK in 1901 to use electricity in the production of gas. At nationalisation the undertaking became part of the Bolton-Radcliffe Group of the NWGB. This small collection contains only property, legal and technical records. There are three items for buildings and plant and one mains register. |
