Title
BLACKBURN CORPORATION
Description
The original Blackburn Gaslight Co was formed in 1818 and a works built alongside the river Blakewater in Bridge St and Jubilee St. However these works quickly became too small and in 1825 new works were begun at Addison St. Both sites were used by the company and the Addison St site was reconstructed in 1876. In 1878 the undertaking was purchased by the Corporation. In 1900 the older Jubilee St works were finally closed and the Addison St site had become difficult to extend. Neither site had had access to a railway and it was decided that a third new site was needed. The Greenbank works were constructed on a 52 acre site to replace both older works, though central offices, stores and a showroom were built on the Jubilee St site. An additional works at Wensley Road was also acquired. In 1949 the works became part of the Blackburn-Accrington Group of the NWGB. This is a small collection containing a few administrative, estate, financial and miscellaneous items. It includes two site plans of the Addison St and Greenbank works, annual reports and accounts and a photograph of the showroom.
