Title
ALTRINCHAM GAS COMPANY
Description
A company was formed in 1846 to supply gas to Altrincham and the works built at Moss Lane opened in 1847. The Altrincham Gas Co was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1872 and capital was raised to extend the works. In 1893 a further Act enabled a tramway to be built between the gasworks and the railway and this was used by horse traction for the supply of coal until 1925. The area of supply of the company included Hale, Bowdon, Timperley and Dunham Massey. The company were also allowed to supply Partington and Carrington although they did not do so. In 1945 the undertaking was acquired by the UKGC. In 1949 it vested in the NWGB. This collection contains a large number of administrative, financial and property records. There are formation records, minute books and annual reports and accounts (1846 - 1949). There are plans, drawings and architectural drawings as well as photograph albums. The financial records include shareholders registers and accounts ledgers. There is also a staff register and pension papers in the personnel series. There are items such as photographs of the showrooms and transport as well as technical records of distribution.
